Projects

In my roles as production editor and product manager, I had numerous opportunities to work with small teams to make publishing tools and websites better. Here is a sampling of some of those projects:

JMG article page redesign (2015 – 2016)

This mockup shows JMG's article redesign shortly before it moved to production.

A small team of journalists, designers and software engineers worked together to redesign article pages for the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel and other Journal Media Group websites (mockup at left). The project included market research, multiple design iterations, input from all stakeholders and multiple development cycles post-launch to improve performance and usability.

JMG/Scripps CMS transitions (2015)
Working with on-site newsroom staff, a small group of Journal Media Group project managers, developers and analysts moved fourteen former Scripps newspaper sites into Journal Media Group’s digital publishing system. The project involved creating new publishing tools and templates, moving existing content between systems and accounting for third-party content. We also had to assure full compatibility with properties existing print publishing system.

Digital production revamp (2014 – 2015)
Members of editorial and the digital development team worked together to overhaul daily article page production for the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. The scope of the project included photo handling, video placement and how to promote and package related content.

JSOnline.com site refresh (2013 – 2014)
Members of editorial, development and a third-party design firm collaborated to refresh elements of JSOnline.com, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel’s website. Improvements and changes included:

  • Launch of a “fat” dropdown navigation that included section headlines and quick links
  • Launch of a “fat” page footer that included social, promotional and partner links
  • Refresh of the homepage layout
  • Minor changes to articles pages and section fronts

NewsGate launch (2013)
A team of newsroom leaders, technical experts and vendor representatives worked to launch NewsGate, an upgraded version of CCI’s digital and print publishing platform.
