About us

The Oyster is neither chic nor dull, neither high-end nor low-rent. We have an off-beat sensibility. Our tastes in entertainment and lifestyle are more green corduroy than black silk. Our mission is to be a voice for Boston's aging adolescents who need to start 401ks, PhD students who serve coffee, and people who avoid measuring success by traditional means.

Samantha Conti
Samantha Conti is a student, freelance writer, and Web producer. Her work has appeared in the Somerville Journal, the Boston Globe, and in her brother’s bathroom. Before returning to school to pursue journalism, she held a 9-to-5 job and traveled around the world looking for the perfect curry. You can often find her on a bar stool in Somerville.

Scott Denne
Scott Denne got his undergraduate degree from the University of Tennessee in 2002. Afterwards he hitchhiked up to Boston. When he is not too busy making homemade strawberry wine he contributes to The Oyster.

Jim Furbush
Born into a clan of traveling illusionists of Ukrainian descent, Furbush left the hardscrabble lifestyle for the more stable life as a roadie for Journey. Upon meeting his hero, Steve Perry, Furbush realized that celebrities are not often what they seem from afar. To alleviate his disappointments he took to penning short story's from a dank basement along the Danube River. Unfortunately, many--if not all--of his stories were obvious Dostoyevski rip offs. Despite this, he is a frequent contributor to The Oyster, sending his dispatches by cross-atlantic freight. In his spare time he spends his afternoons playing All-Time Quarterback and attempts to raise his batting average above the Mendoza Line.

Craig Nickels
Craig Nickels is a student, Web producer and freelance writer. His work has appeared in, on, or near the Boston Globe, the Boston Business Journal, Boston.com, Filmfodder.com, the Patriot Ledger, the Jamaica Plain Gazette and Media Ethics Magazine. Prior to pursing a career in journalism, Craig drifted through years of office drudgery, food service, and working with at-risk youth. He has many leather-bound books and his apartment smells of rich mahogany.

Amanda Patterson
Amanda Patterson lived in a ditch called Yosemite before making the questionable decision to pursue a career in journalism. She has written for the TAB newspapers, the Somerville News and the Andover Townsman. At The Oyster, she plans on spending countless hours twirling her hair and staring at the computer screen, which has a small wine stain in one corner.

Jonathan Schwab
Jonathan Schwab is an oyster lover from southwest Virginia. He came to Boston to get his masters in journalism after studying anthropology as an undergraduate student at the University of Virginia. Jonathan has written for The Jewish Advocate, the Community Newspaper Company, The Daily Progress, and The News-Gazette. In addition to writing, he enjoys running, speaking Spanish, biking, watching movies, hanging out, listening to music, reading literature and comic books, and eating.
